Fabuwood Stock Cabinets | Gray | Storrs, CT

This Storrs, CT kitchen remodel transforms an 1850 home with Fabuwood Galaxy stock cabinetry, granite countertops, and a two-tone design. The Dean team built a functional layout through close collaboration and careful planning.

The Kitchen Story

A New Chapter for an 1850s Home

After a career in Massachusetts, this homeowner chose to return to her roots and settle in Storrs, CT. Retirement gave her the perfect opportunity to create the home she had long envisioned.

The property the client chose came with a fascinating history—the house was built in 1850 and was picked up and moved to its current location years ago. While the residence was brimming with historic charm, the kitchen was “historic” in the toughest sense of the word. With barely any cabinets and a layout that hadn’t kept pace with time, the homeowner knew a renovation was the first order of business.

Collaborative Kitchen Planning

The goal was to respect the home’s 19th-century heart while installing a highly functional, 21st-century workspace.

The homeowner worked closely with Client Manager, Paul, throughout the kitchen planning phase. Having lived in previous homes, the client had a clear understanding of what they liked — and disliked — in past kitchens, making the process highly collaborative and thoughtfully tailored to their needs.

The client noted having a great rapport with Paul — with him offering suggestions and her tweaking the details — resulting in what the client described as a “very functional” kitchen.

Paul suggested adding an extra storage area that the client hadn’t initially considered; today, that floor-to-ceiling pantry has solved the home’s original storage deficit.

The client shared that she enjoyed browsing the Dean Cabinetry website for ideas and inspiration throughout the planning process. She especially appreciated the variety of projects featured and was specifically looking for a simple, flat moulding style that she wasn’t able to find. That experience motivated her to complete the optional final step of the 6-Step Process — Follow Up — so she could showcase her project and provide inspiration for future clients seeking a similar style.

The client worked with Frank Halle from Spring Hill Builders and Remodelers. Frank is a trusted, long-time partner Dean Cabinetry frequently collaborates with!

Thoughtful Selections with Stock Cabinetry

For the cabinetry, the client selected Fabuwood Galaxy line in a sophisticated two-tone color palette. The perimeter cabinets are finished in Horizon, a soft grey that keeps the space feeling airy. To anchor the room, the island is finished in Cobblestone, a deep charcoal that provides a beautiful contrast.

These are topped with stunning granite counters that feature a dramatic, flowing movement—the homeowner’s favorite item in the entire kitchen.

Meticulous Execution and Adaptability

The installation process highlighted the detailed nature of the DC team. Installer, Matt, was described as “meticulous,” ensuring every door and drawer was perfectly adjusted.

When an adjustment was needed for a drawer insert on-site, Matt was able to quickly adapt and make the modification seamlessly. This level of on-site problem-solving helped make the renovation process smooth and enjoyable, resulting in a space that is both highly functional and beautifully finished.

Client Reaction

The homeowner is thrilled with the final result, especially the timeless color palette that ties the space together. By choosing high-quality Fabuwood cabinetry and partnering with a team that prioritized collaboration, attention to detail, and seamless execution, the renovation process felt smooth from start to finish. The result is a kitchen that beautifully honors the home’s historic character while providing the comfort, functionality, and style needed for this next chapter in Storrs!
