After meeting this retired couple in Manchester, CT, it was clear that their renovation journey was more than just a project—it was a celebration of a life well-lived. After years of hard work, they were ready to treat themselves and finally create the kitchen of their dreams—a place where memories could continue to be made, shared, and passed down. Their vintage-style colonial home, lovingly curated with family antiques, holds cherished stories and moments in time. One major goal of the renovation was to modernize the kitchen while preserving its original character and aesthetic.
The original 1976 kitchen had plenty of charm and storage, but the new design focused on two main goals: opening up the space to be more airy and light and creating a welcoming environment where everyone could feel connected. When company came over, they naturally gathered in the kitchen, but the cramped dining area and dividing walls kept family and conversations separated.
That’s when the handy husband took charge as the general contractor, calling on friends and contacts to get the renovation going! With walls removed and a new window added, the space began to breathe new life into their home. The transformation started with semi-custom Designer’s Choice Branford frameless overlay cabinets in Antique White, which kept the kitchen light and bright. The quartz countertop from Granite & Kitchen Studio in South Windsor added a touch of color and texture, blending seamlessly with the home’s timeless charm. New Frigidaire appliances and a KitchenAid panel ready dishwasher, bring modern conveniences to the space. Beadboard accents on the ceiling and backsplash in Sherwin Williams Clary Sage continued the classic aesthetic. This kitchen is also packed with storage and accessories, including a pantry with shelves and roll-outs for dishes and bowls, extra-wide drawers with a dual utensil and knife organizer, and a super susan with wood trays for extra food storage.
What truly makes this kitchen unique and personalized, however, are the thoughtfully repurposed elements from their original kitchen, like the on-trend black pulls and the kitchen island. The island’s base is a repurposed hutch, topped with a white oak breadboard countertop from our friends at Parkerville Wood Products.
Now, as they step into this new chapter, their kitchen stands as a testament to their thoughtful planning, creativity, and love for their well-lived home.
